Yes, this post will be discussing an economic concept. If you don’t like economics you can go be broke on someone else’s time.
You have a limited time on earth and every minute either take you closer to your goals or further away. Everyone has 168 hours in their week and the difference between the successful and the failures is how they spend each hour of their week. Spending your time productively is the difference between becoming successful and becoming a failure.
Why Do People Waste Time?
There are two reasons people waste time. The first is that they have no goals and future they are working to. Without a vivid image of what you want in life it is too easy to slip into laziness in complacency. You need to think about what your life is going to be like in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years. If you keep living like you are living now will it be a pretty sight? If your answer is a loud “No!” you need to change something, quickly.
Write down what you want your life to look like in 5 years time. Don’t over-analyze this, simply write it down. Once you have an image of the life you want you need to write down your goals. What do you need to do that will get you where you need to be?
The second reason people waste their time is because they forget that their time on earth is limited. You will die one day, and on your deathbed do you want to think about how much of your life you wasted? Most people on earth live very average lives, many people live their whole life in fear and suffering from anxiety and depression. Very few people live their lives to the fullest – you need to strive to become one of these people.
How To Live A Life Worth Living
To live a high value life you need to think about the impact of the your actions. Are choosing to take part in high value activities or are you wasting your time with low value activities? What is the opportunity cost of your actions?
Opportunity cost is the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.
Think about this whenever you are wasting your time. What high value activity am I missing out on because I am wasting my time?
This all depends on the level you are at. The opportunity cost of Elon Musk watching movies all day is much greater than the opportunity cost of Joe Schmoe watching movies all day. This concept will teach you to value your time, but only if you apply it to your own life and the situation you are in.
The idea of opportunity cost should be meditated upon daily.
“It is spiritless to think that you cannot attain to that which you have seen and heard the masters attain. The masters are men. You are also a man. If you think that you will be inferior in doing something, you will be on that road very soon.”
